Our Koi
The most vital part of our farm - our koi. Our first fish were directly imported from Japan in 2005. Since then, we have not brought additional fish into our system. We practice strict quality control with our stock. Every year, we sacrifice 60 to 70 koi to be sent for testing at the University of Minnesota laboratory for various diseases and parasites. We are very confident that our koi are healthy.
When the conditions permit - water, temperature and sun - we move the breeding triads to the outdoor lined ponds. Our farm has 10 - 25′x25′x4′ ponds covered by netting and surrounded by netting and silt fencing to keep out birds and other predators that might prey on the koi. These protective barriers also help to keep out animals that may carry parasites into the ponds. The babies remain outside until fall and are fed several times a day. After sorting and culling, the fish are brought indoors. Once there, they are fed twice a day to help create responsive pets - keeping them happier too.
